Why KuCoin#

KuCoin is the most active non-Binance crypto exchange in our Telegram ad archive by creative volume, with presence across SEA, Africa, LATAM, and CIS simultaneously. Founded in 2017 with a brand identity built around early altcoin listings — "the people's exchange" — KuCoin's Telegram advertising strategy has undergone a visible transformation since March 2024, when the US Department of Justice charged the exchange and its founders in a landmark anti-money laundering case.

Tracking KuCoin's creative evolution across our archive reveals a clear before/after DOJ posture shift: pre-settlement creatives led with altcoin discovery and low-fee hooks; post-settlement creatives increasingly emphasize regulatory progress, user counts, and security credentials. Both eras are present in our dataset.

Company Background#

Dimension Detail
Founded 2017
Registration Seychelles (KuCoin Global)
Claimed users 30M+
Known for Early altcoin listings, "people's exchange" branding
Futures/margin Available (up to 100x leverage on futures)
Spot trading pairs 700+ as of 2026
DOJ case March 2024, AML/BSA violations charged
Settlement $297M, founders pleaded guilty to AML violations
Post-settlement KYC Mandatory KYC implemented globally post-settlement

The DOJ Moment: A Landmark Case#

The March 2024 DOJ action against KuCoin was significant beyond the exchange itself. Federal prosecutors charged that KuCoin knowingly facilitated transactions for sanctioned jurisdictions and operated as an unlicensed money-transmitting business despite processing more than $9B through US-based customers.

For Telegram advertising research, the DOJ case is a useful watershed:

  • Pre-March 2024 creatives in our archive: aggressive altcoin discovery framing, low/no-KYC messaging, "trade any token" positioning
  • Post-settlement creatives: compliance-forward ("secure, regulated, trusted by 30M users"), no mention of KYC-optional access, security audit references prominent

The $297M settlement — and the founders' guilty pleas — forced a brand reset that is legible in the creative archive. This kind of regulatory event creating a measurable creative strategy shift is rare in our dataset and makes KuCoin a useful case study for researchers tracking how exchanges adapt under enforcement pressure.

Creative Patterns: Pre- vs Post-DOJ#

Pre-Settlement (before March 2024)#

Copy themes:

  • "KuCoin — trade any altcoin. 700+ tokens listed"
  • "New token listings daily — be the first on KuCoin"
  • "No KYC for small withdrawals — trade instantly"
  • Low-fee emphasis, referral bonuses as primary hooks

Format: Primarily text-only (Format C) and banner (Format A) with token logo collages

Post-Settlement (April 2024 onward)#

Copy themes:

  • "KuCoin — trusted by 30M+ users worldwide"
  • "Secure, regulated crypto trading on KuCoin"
  • "KuCoin: 700+ tokens, bank-grade security"
  • Compliance language enters copy for the first time; bonus/referral still present but subordinated

Format: Same mix, but banner creatives increasingly feature trust-signal imagery (security badges, user-count displays) rather than token ticker collages

Geo-by-Geo Breakdown#

Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand)#

SEA is KuCoin's deepest market in our archive by creative volume. The exchange targets active retail trading communities in Telegram's densest crypto-discussion channels.

Indonesia:

  • "KuCoin — trading altcoin terbaik. Daftar gratis"
  • "Hasilkan passive income dengan KuCoin Earn"
  • "KuCoin: 700+ koin, fee terendah di Indonesia"
  • Copy note: "passive income" framing is consistent across Indonesian creatives — matching the dominant aspiration in the market

Vietnam:

  • Trading signal channel targeting, copy emphasizes "market-first listings"
  • VND deposits via local bank transfer featured post-2024

Philippines:

  • "KuCoin Earn — staking, lending, savings"
  • PHP peso deposit options mentioned in late-2024 creatives

Aggressiveness score: 6/10 (SEA). Exchange positioning throughout; leverage products present but not leading; passive income framing is aspirational rather than predatory.

Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania)#

Nigeria:

  • "KuCoin Nigeria — buy USDT with bank transfer. Zero fees"
  • "KuCoin P2P — NGN deposits, no bank limits"
  • P2P trading marketplace is the dominant hook: Nigerian users face naira volatility and banking restrictions that make P2P crypto-to-fiat conversion a practical need, not just a speculative one

Ghana/Kenya:

  • MoMo (Ghana) and M-Pesa (Kenya) payment method mentions in 2025 creatives
  • "KuCoin — send and receive crypto with MoMo"

Aggressiveness score: 6/10. Banking-access framing (P2P, local payment methods) is the primary hook — pragmatic rather than speculative.

CIS (Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine)#

  • "KuCoin — 700+ альткоинов. Торгуй первым"
  • "KuCoin: спот + фьючерсы + боты"
  • Futures trading and trading bot automation (KuCoin has a well-known bot marketplace) are the primary differentiators vs Binance in CIS creatives
  • Post-DOJ: CIS creatives added "надёжная биржа, 30M пользователей" trust signal

Aggressiveness score: 6/10. Futures/leverage present but framed as tools for active traders, not get-rich promises.

LATAM (Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina)#

Brazil:

  • "KuCoin Brasil — depósito com PIX + cripto"
  • "KuCoin Earn: renda passiva em cripto"
  • PIX integration mentioned in 2025 creatives, matching the localization investment pattern seen across Binance and Stake in Brazil

Spanish LATAM (Mexico, Colombia):

  • "KuCoin — trading de criptos sin complicaciones"
  • "Altcoins nuevos cada semana en KuCoin"
  • New token listings as hook vs Binance's more conservative listing pace

Aggressiveness score: 6/10 (Brazil), 7/10 (Mexico, Colombia — more altcoin-speculative framing in Spanish creatives).

KuCoin vs Binance: Advertising Posture Comparison#

Dimension KuCoin Binance
Archive creative count 20+ 18+
Primary brand axis Altcoin variety / "people's exchange" Compliance / largest exchange / ecosystem
Regulatory framing Post-DOJ: compliance-forward pivot Compliance as primary brand asset since 2023
Leverage advertising Present (futures, up to 100x) Present but subordinated
Fee positioning Low-fee, fee comparison vs competitors Ecosystem benefits, BNB discount
Africa focus Strong (P2P, local payment methods) Moderate (Binance P2P present, less ad volume)
SEA focus Very strong Strong
Post-regulatory pivot DOJ settlement (March 2024) Zhao guilty plea + $4.3B settlement (Nov 2023)

The key brand distinction: Binance uses regulatory resolution as a brand asset ("we settled, we're compliant, we're here to stay"). KuCoin's post-DOJ positioning is more defensive — "trusted by 30M users" adds social proof without directly referencing the settlement.

The Altcoin Discovery Moat#

Before and after the DOJ case, KuCoin's most consistent competitive claim is early token listings. The exchange historically listed altcoins 4–8 weeks before Binance in many cases, building a reputation among retail speculators for first-mover access to new tokens.

This shows up in Telegram creatives as:

  • "New listings every week — KuCoin"
  • "Find the next 10x before Binance lists it"
  • "700+ tokens — trade what others don't have"

The "find it before Binance" framing is implicit but legible, particularly in SEA and CIS creatives. It positions KuCoin as the platform for the speculative-discovery segment that Binance's more conservative listing pace fails to serve.

Post-DOJ, this messaging has moderated somewhat — the "no KYC" angle that amplified the altcoin-discovery pitch has been removed, making the listing variety claim stand on its own without the compliance-evasion overtone.

Aggressiveness Scoring#

Advertiser Archive creatives Overall aggressiveness Primary risk angle
KuCoin 20+ 6/10 Altcoin speculation, legacy no-KYC
Binance 18+ 4/10 Minimal — compliance-forward
Bybit 14+ 7/10 Derivatives, leverage-first
OKX 10+ 5/10 Web3 ecosystem, moderate leverage

KuCoin sits between Binance's conservative posture and Bybit's leverage-first approach. The DOJ settlement has moved it closer to Binance on the compliance axis, but the altcoin-discovery core remains.
